Lisa Gingles works at the crossroads of drawing, collage and sculpture, giving form to figures that seem to belong equally to myth and memory. Her hybrid characters, half animal and half human, often mask-like and always without a face of their own, inhabit a territory shaped by folklore, travel and the stories passed quietly between generations. Born in Northern Ireland in 1974 and based in Valencia since 1998, she brings that inherited sense of the uncanny into a visual language entirely her own.

Its title borrowed from the Latin for “mother raven,” Mater Corvus takes the form of a wooden box that opens to nearly double its width, revealing a hidden interior scene modelled in air-dry clay and finished in acrylic. The raven, a recurring figure of guardianship, transformation and warning across folklore, becomes here a maternal presence: watchful, protective, and slightly otherworldly. Closed, the piece guards its secret; opened, it offers it freely, a small theatre built around the idea of what a mother keeps and what she finally lets be seen.

Owning Mater Corvus means holding a piece built to be discovered twice, once closed, as an object of quiet mystery, and once opened, as a small revealed world. It is a work that rewards patience and touch, from an artist whose hybrid, folklore-steeped universe continues to draw growing international attention.
