Lisa Gingles moves fluidly between drawing, collage and sculpture, drawn again and again to figures that carry more than they say. Her hybrid characters and enclosed, theatrical objects are shaped by mythology, folklore, travel and memory, born of a life lived between Northern Ireland, where she was born in 1974, and Valencia, her home since 1998.

The title borrows the English idiom for an obvious truth everyone can see but no one names aloud, a phrase whose exact origins are debated but whose meaning has stayed constant: something too large to miss, deliberately unspoken. In this second instalment of the series, Gingles gives that avoided presence physical form, modelled in air-dry clay and sealed within its wooden box. The box itself becomes complicit in the silence, holding its outsized subject just out of view, asking the viewer to decide whether opening it is an act of honesty or one more way of looking away.

To collect The Elephant in the Room II is to keep, quite literally, a small version of the thing no one wants to say out loud, rendered with the same care and restraint that runs through Gingles’ wider body of work. It is a piece for those drawn to art that names what usually stays unspoken, by an artist steadily gaining recognition beyond Ireland.
