Every artwork travels protected with the same care with which it was chosen.
Lisa Gingles works across drawing, collage and sculpture, drawn to fragile, tactile objects that hold feeling somewhere between tenderness and vulnerability. Her practice draws on mythology, folklore, travel and memory, shaped by a life divided between Northern Ireland, where she was born in 1974, and Valencia, her home since 1998.
A second iteration of the heart cast in resin and embedded with real sand, Heart Made of Sand II moves from the enclosed wooden box of its predecessor into a circular wooden frame, presenting the same fragile material directly to view rather than sealing it away. Freed from its container, the heart’s shifting, granular substance is left fully exposed, a material that scatters and resists permanence, held together only by the resin that binds it, and now, quite literally, on display rather than hidden. The circular format lends the piece the presence of a small relic or medallion, something meant to be looked at rather than opened.
To collect Heart Made of Sand II is to own a companion piece that reworks its predecessor’s fragility into something more openly displayed, a small, cast object that trades concealment for direct exposure. It marks a quiet evolution in Gingles’ handling of a recurring material and theme, from an artist whose work continues to draw growing attention beyond Ireland.
