Lisa Gingles moves fluidly between drawing, collage and sculpture, returning again and again to faces that hide as much as they reveal. Masks, hybrid creatures and half-remembered figures recur throughout her work, shaped by mythology, folklore and a life lived between Northern Ireland, where she was born in 1974, and Valencia, her home since 1998.

Rendered in pencil on a sheet of found paper, already carrying its own unknown history before the artist’s hand touched it, Self Portrait with Mask I turns self-portraiture into an act of concealment rather than confession. The mask, a recurring motif throughout Gingles’ practice, becomes here a second skin, raising the question of which is more honest: the face beneath, or the one chosen to be shown. The paper’s found, imperfect surface lends the drawing a quiet sense of having always existed, half memory, half invention.
