Lisa Gingles works across drawing, collage and sculpture, drawn to relationships, both tender and strange, between figures who are never quite what they first appear to be. Her work draws on mythology, folklore, travel and memory, shaped by a life divided between Northern Ireland, where she was born in 1974, and Valencia, her home since 1998.
Drawn in pencil on a sheet of found paper, already carrying its own unknown past before the artist’s hand touched it, The Lovers depicts two intertwined figures rendered in Gingles’ hybrid style. The found paper’s imperfect surface gives the drawing a quiet sense of history, while its intimate scale invites a closer, more private kind of viewing. Framed, the piece is presented as a single, self-contained scene.
To collect The Lovers is to own a drawing that sits at the emotional core of Gingles’ practice, a paper original made more singular by the found sheet beneath it, framed and ready to hold its place on a wall. It is a quietly intimate work by an artist whose hybrid, folklore-rooted world continues to draw growing attention beyond Ireland.
