Lisa Gingles works across drawing, collage and sculpture, often giving human traits to animal forms drawn from mythology, folklore, travel and memory. Her practice returns frequently to small enclosed structures, cages, boxes and framed spaces that hold a single figure in isolation.
The Illusion of Company presents a humanoid bird figure confined within a small wooden cage, a round mirror placed beside it as its only companion. Modelled in air-dry clay and finished in acrylic, the figure’s own reflection stands in for the presence of another, company that is, as the title makes plain, illusory rather than real. The cage itself, built from wood rather than the wire or metal one might expect, gives the piece a handmade, domestic quality, small enough to hold in one hand.
To collect The Illusion of Company is to own one of Gingles’ most direct meditations on solitude, a small caged figure whose only company is its own reflection. It is a piece from an artist whose hybrid, folklore-rooted figures continue to gain growing international recognition.
