Lisa Gingles works across drawing, collage and sculpture, giving form to hybrid, masked figures drawn from mythology, folklore, travel and memory. She often pairs animal and human forms within small, staged tableaux.

The Owl and the Pussycat takes its title directly from Edward Lear’s beloved 1871 nonsense poem, in which an owl and a cat fall in love, sail away together and marry. Gingles stages the pair as two human-bodied figures standing hand in hand within an open wooden box set against a dark background, the man wearing an owl mask, the woman a cat’s. Modelled in air-dry clay with resin and sand and finished in acrylic, the piece translates Lear’s whimsical courtship into Gingles’ own hybrid visual language, tender and slightly uncanny in equal measure.

To collect The Owl and the Pussycat is to own one of Gingles’ most overtly narrative pieces, a hand-modelled scene built around a classic tale of unlikely love. It is a piece from an artist whose folklore-rooted, hybrid figures continue to gain growing international recognition.
