Lisa Gingles works across drawing, collage and sculpture, giving form to animal and hybrid figures drawn from mythology, folklore, travel and memory, constructing a territory where the human and the fantastical coexist.

The Door was always Open presents a humanoid bird figure, rendered in black and white air dry clay, enclosed within an antique-style wooden birdcage with a functioning door. A small round mirror is set within the piece, catching the viewer’s own reflection alongside the figure.

To collect The Door was always Open is to bring home a piece that pairs Gingles’ meticulous hybrid figuration with an object as evocative as the antique cage itself — a work built to be looked at closely, and looked back at in return.
