Jesús Aguado was born in Valladolid in 1976 and studied Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca. For the next two decades, he built an extensive career as a commercial and editorial illustrator, creating artwork for textbook publishers such as Santillana in Spain and for publishers across Taiwan, work that demanded he communicate complex ideas clearly across very different cultures and audiences.
Around 2017–2018, Aguado expanded his practice into oil and acrylic painting, channeling two decades of editorial discipline into a new, deeply personal body of work. His paintings fuse Renaissance technique, dramatic chiaroscuro and a horror vacui reminiscent of the old masters, with the imagination of comic books, creating a style often described as "Baroque Surrealism." Working in acrylic glazes on traditional wood and birch panels, he builds translucent layers of light that lend his fantastical, chimerical figures a tangible, luminous presence.
His canvases are densely populated worlds where dragons, rabbits, caterpillars, and other animal figures stand in for the endearing and the disturbing in equal measure, largely without human presence, allowing viewers everywhere to project themselves into his imagery. Since the birth of his son in 2023, this exploration has deepened further, giving rise to his "Life Milestones" series, in which the pivotal, transformative moments of life are rendered as vivid, symbolic, and often humorous visual metaphors.
With this unique artistic style, Aguado has exhibited in some of the most prestigious galleries within the lowbrow and pop surrealist movement, showing his work internationally.
For collectors, Jesús Aguado represents a rare synthesis: two decades of commercial illustration discipline fused with classical painting technique and a genuinely personal surrealist vision. Owning one of his paintings means holding a work built with the technical rigor of the old masters and the visual fluency of a lifelong image-maker, one whose densely layered, luminous worlds continue to evolve alongside his own life.
