Lisa Gingles works across drawing, collage and sculpture, populating her pieces with hybrid figures and characters drawn from mythology, folklore, travel and memory. Born in Northern Ireland in 1974 and based in Valencia since 1998, she builds small, standing worlds that sit somewhere between the human and the animal.

The Boatman presents a solitary standing humanoid figure with rabbit ears, its gaze lifted upward, with a small boat resting at its feet. Modelled in polymer clay and finished in a weathered, rust-toned paint, the figure carries a worn, oxidised surface that gives it an aged, timeworn presence. The pairing of the upright, watchful figure with so small and grounded a boat sets two different scales and states of stillness side by side within the same piece.

To collect The Boatman is to own one of Gingles’ hybrid figures, rendered in her own weathered, rust-toned palette, human, animal and vessel brought together within a single standing sculpture. It is a piece from an artist whose folklore-rooted practice continues to draw growing attention beyond Ireland.
