Miss Van (Vanessa Alice Bensimon, b. 1973, Toulouse) began painting the walls of her native city with a paintbrush rather than a spray can back in the 1990s, becoming one of the pioneers who opened the door for a female presence in a movement long dominated by men. Based in Barcelona for over two decades, she has exhibited worldwide, from early shows in Paris and Toulouse to galleries in New York, London and Rome, culminating in her first institutional solo exhibition at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga in 2016. Her work has evolved from brush-on-wall pieces into oil and acrylic on canvas, built around her signature Muses: sultry, elegant women who appear behind masks, drawing on tribal symbols, folklore and references such as Frida Kahlo and Tamara de Lempicka.
To collect Portrait with Fox Mask is to own a unique 2023 painting by one of urban contemporary art’s most established female voices — an artist who was there at the beginning of the movement’s feminine presence and three decades later remains one of its most collected names, with an institutional record running from Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York to a museum solo in Málaga. It is a rare chance to own an original Miss Van canvas, painted with the technical refinement that has only deepened over a career built brushstroke by brushstroke.
