Lisa Gingles works across drawing, collage and sculpture, giving form to animal and hybrid figures drawn from mythology, folklore, travel and memory, constructing a territory where the human and the fantastical coexist. Alongside this figurative work, she also produces quieter, landscape-based drawings.
Newfoundland 1 is a subtle black-and-white charcoal landscape, forming a pair together with Newfoundland 2 — the two drawings can be collected together or acquired separately.
To collect Newfoundland 1 is to bring in a rare glimpse of Gingles’ landscape practice — a quieter counterpoint to her sculptural and figurative work, built instead from tone, restraint and the simple weight of charcoal on paper.
