Every artwork travels protected with the same care with which it was chosen.
Lisa Gingles works across drawing, collage and sculpture, returning often to small, handled objects that carry feeling just beneath their surface. Her practice draws on mythology, folklore, travel and memory, shaped by a life divided between Northern Ireland, where she was born in 1974, and Valencia, her home since 1998.
Third in the series, Heart Made of Sand III keeps the resin-and-sand heart visible, presented this time within a round gold frame rather than sealed inside a box. Unlike the first instalment, contained within a closed wooden box, here the fragile material remains fully in view, framed rather than enclosed, offering a new way of presenting the same shifting, granular substance that runs through the whole series. The gold frame lends the piece an almost devotional air, like a small reliquary left open rather than closed, rewarding a direct gaze rather than curiosity about what lies hidden.
To collect Heart Made of Sand III is to own the point at which this ongoing series folds back on itself, concealment returning after exposure, in a form that is rounder, deeper and more contained than either of its predecessors. It is a small, considered object from an artist whose work continues to draw growing attention beyond Ireland.
