A queer and contemporary reinterpretation of Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, where five ambiguous figures are absorbed by flowers and patterns reminiscent of digital filters. The work reflects on the tension between identity and assimilation within the flow of social media.
Silvia Bignami (Bologna, 1978) is an Italian painter whose work combines a rigorous figurative foundation with a distinctly contemporary tension. After a career as a senior editor at La Repubblica, she devoted herself fully to painting, developing a practice rooted in classical techniques such as grisaille, glazing, and chiaroscuro, while disrupting the surface through scratches, spatula marks, and abrasive interventions. Her figures explore identity as something fluid and unstable—caught between vulnerability and resistance. Bignami has exhibited internationally, including shows at Galleria Wikiarte (Bologna), Art3f Milano and Paris, and upcoming presentations at MEAM (Barcelona) and TIAC (Florence), positioning her as a strong emerging voice in contemporary figurative painting.
