Gerard Mas (b. 1976, Girona) trained at Barcelona’s School of Arts and Crafts and in sculpture conservation and restoration, a background that still shapes the formal precision of his work. Carving in alabaster, marble, wood, bronze and polychrome resin, he populates his own universe of anachronistic classical and Renaissance figures — ladies blowing chewing-gum bubbles, showing off orthodontic braces, or gently stroking a pet rat — academically rendered yet charged with irony and visual poetry. His pieces are held in collections including MEAM (the European Museum of Modern Art), Fundació Vila Casas, MEFIC and the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson, and he has shown extensively at fairs such as Art Madrid, ESTAMPA, Art Miami and Context Art Miami.
Tongue-Out Lady places one of Mas’s classical female busts — rendered with all the formal gravity of an antique polychrome sculpture — in the middle of a single, disarming gesture: her tongue stuck out at the viewer. The incongruity is deliberate, pitting the dignified, timeless authority usually associated with such a figure against a gesture of pure, childlike irreverence, breaking the very archetype the sculpture so convincingly imitates. Carved and polychromed with the same academic rigor Mas brings to his more solemn classical subjects, the piece puts that technical precision in the service of humor rather than reverence, in keeping with the artist’s broader practice of unsettling classical form with anachronistic, very human gestures.
To collect Tongue-Out Lady is to own a small, limited edition from a Barcelona sculptor whose academically trained hand — honed through years as a restorer — has built an entire universe of ironic, anachronistic classical figures, now held in collections including MEAM and the Fundació Vila Casas and shown at major fairs from Art Madrid to Art Miami.
