Mono Cieza (Argentina, based in Barcelona since 2001) studied musical composition at the Faculty of Fine Arts in La Plata before moving to Barcelona to study cinema — a background that shaped the deeply narrative, dreamlike quality of the pop-surrealist universe he now builds through sculpture. His path ran through film composition, slow-motion filmmaking, collage, drawing and installation before he settled on sculpture, refining his technique through modeling studies at Barcelona’s La Llotja academy. In his work, animals, hybrid bodies and mystical, oneiric worlds converge — pieces whose full meaning, he says, often only reveals itself once the work is finished. He has held solo shows including “Tales of the Two Moons” (2017) and shown at major fairs such as Urvanity Madrid, Moniker Art Fair (London and New York), District 13 Paris, Scope Basel and Stroke Munich, alongside gallery exhibitions in Barcelona, Los Angeles and Berlin.

Flight Rehearsal I portrays one of Cieza’s hybrid creatures reclining in black ceramic, one arm raised to hold a bird aloft in its hand. The entire piece is cast in black but for the bird itself, finished in gold leaf patina, so that this single luminous form stands out against the surrounding darkness — as if the gesture of holding, or offering, were the one point where the sculpture chooses to catch the light. Modeled with the same narrative precision that runs through Cieza’s larger mythological universe, it condenses that world into an intimate, tabletop scale.
