Graham Gingles is an Irish sculptor born in 1943 and a member of the Royal Ulster Academy. His multidisciplinary practice combines painting, drawing and sculpture to create objects and scenes of strong narrative and symbolic character, with works held in collections including the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA).
Childe Roland’s Tower II is a wall-mounted mixed media sculpture, its wood and glass box construction giving the piece a tower-like, vertical presence. The title draws on Robert Browning’s 1855 poem “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,” in which a lone knight completes a long, uncertain quest to reach a distant tower. As with much of Gingles’ work, the enclosure functions as a small stage, holding its contents within a fixed and deliberate architecture.
